Scientists are researching and applying their expertise to critical health issues across the following six interdisciplinary domains. Cells and Tissue Human Health and Wellbeing Injury Prevention and Rehabilitation Medical Device Tropical Crops and Biocommodities Vision Improvement Cells and Tissue IHBI scientists are developing innovative new technologies and therapeutic approaches to restore functionality in damaged human tissue. This includes skin, muscles, bones, joints and eyes. More details. Human Health and Wellbeing Institute researchers are exploring critical health issues in order to design better community healthcare options. They are currently looking at topics such as healthy ageing, and chronic disease. More details. Injury Prevention and Rehabilitation This team seeks to analyse and modify human behaviour to avoid dangerous situations. It also develops strategies for damage recovery. The team is a collaboration of scientists and scholars from disciplines as diverse as human movement, health psychology, optometry, epidemiology, medical physics, public health and biomedical and civil engineering. More details. Medical Device IHBI scientists are developing technologies that assist practitioners with the accurate diagnosis of illness and injury. The team is a collaboration of practising surgeons, biomedical engineers, chemists, medical physicists, cell biologists, biostatisticians, mathematicians and laboratory technicians. More details. Tropical Crops and Biocommodities This team grows plants that produce materials that are therapeutic or benefit human nutrition. With broad expertise in plant biotechnology, the team places a particular emphasis on the expression of novel genes in tropical crops. More details. Vision Improvement IHBI researchers are at the forefront of research into advanced vision correction. This team’s collaborative research prevents injury, enhances eye health and improves health services. Researchers look to care for the eyes by advancing the techniques that are used to correct and maintain clear sight, including the prevention of myopia (short sightedness) and the development of ophthalmic devices.
