Domain Leader: Professor James Dale

Molecular Farming encompasses the production of high value proteins in plants; IHBI's Molecular Farming team has the expertise and capacity to transform plants and to express diagnostic or therapeutic proteins in those plants and the intellectual property access to molecular farming processes. The researchers have already generated an array of transgenic crops including tobacco, bananas, sugarcane and papaya expressing different traits such as disease resistance, candidate vaccines and industrial proteins. This group has also developed and patented widely in the area of transgene expression in plants with particular emphasis on a platform technology known as INPACT (In Plant ACTivation) which provides exquisite control over the time, place and level of protein expression. These components provide the competitive advantage for QUT to progress this area from a research program through to commercial development. Farmacule Bioindustries Pty Ltd has been established and is the only biotechnology company in Australia formed to establish a molecular farming industry.
